Paterson has an interesting history and was well known as a major source of silk production in the late 1800's. Known as Silk City, the city of Paterson was home to many immigrant laborers who came to work in the factories. Until the 1913 Paterson silk strike, immigrants found themselves working under dangerous conditions and for very low wages. These conditions resulted in the development of unions, at which point many factories began moving out of the city.
Because Paterson is the third largest city in New Jersey, there are several schools that serve the student aged children. Paterson has over thirty elementary and middle schools, as well as four high schools and several academies.
